A Discreet Carry Bag for a Short-Barreled AR-15

A full-size rifle case announces what is inside. Gun Websites looked at a slim bag made to carry a satellite antenna, and how it holds a broken-down 10.5-inch AR-15 short-barreled rifle without drawing attention.

The bag

  • A coyote brown SAT-COM antenna bag, slim enough to carry by the handle or tuck behind a truck seat.
  • A Velcro strap added to keep the shoulder strap tucked away, then pulled free when needed.
  • A double zipper joined by a single pull opens both zippers at once. A small polymer carabiner keeps the zippers from walking open.

Inside

  • The upper and lower receivers of a 10.5-inch SBR, separated by a foam-padded nylon divider so they do not scratch each other.
  • An inner pocket that can take a water bladder or spare parts.

Outside

  • A front flap with a center-stitched double pocket, one 30-round magazine in each.
  • PALS webbing for magazine or radio pouches.
  • A large rear pocket for gloves, water and a copy of the rifle’s NFA paperwork.

Getting it running

  • Pull the two halves, pin the upper to the lower, insert a magazine and charge the rifle. The video shows it done at full speed.

Things to consider

  • A short-barreled rifle must be registered under the NFA. Keep a copy of the approved paperwork with it.
  • Know your state and local transport laws.
